Rammstein - Links 234 / Left 234
(live in France, Nimes, 2005)

„Links (Left) 2 3 4 is a soldiers' marching intonation in the army. This is why you also hear marching sounds/rhythms and see the band marching on the stage at the beginning of the song.
Here Rammstein satirically play with world-wide persisting stereotypes of Germany and Germans today (here: German military and the world wars in specific).
Some of the band members also make fun of these clichés by ostentatiously wearing Bavarian traditional costumes ('Lederhosen') as stage outfits.

Moreover, in this song they give the definite answer to those many critics (which they call here 'enviers' or 'grudgers') who wrongfully shoved them into the (extreme) right-wing corner.
Rammstein, however, describe themselves as rather unpolitical or even left-wing - which is also the main statement of this song („looking down at me, I see my heart beats on the left).
There is already an ironic fact indicated by the song title: Nazis or any right-wing (para-)militaristic groups actually have to count „left instead of „right" when they do marching exercises.

  • @HerrSpieldose they can't grasp it... the fact that in both the US and Germany that the open minded left is just as militant as the right and this song sends that message....

  • okay, I have had numerous arguments with many Americans regarding the meaning of the lyrics because of the use of "zwo" as opposed to "zwei" and to many of them this is enough to turn them off from the real meaning... I lived in the US for all but 3 years in Bayern and was raised speaking both languages and the internet translator only gives the americans so much... they are unable to grasp the real meaning so it is pointless to try to explain it to them... and the left being militant is tru
