Its DEBRIS you stupid prick!

@CX14799 The blast deflector is there only to deflect the hot hot exhaust gases upward for high power runs and take off.
-
is that why they put a blast shield?
-
FOD - Foreign Object Damage not Debris
-
Their FOD walk was ineffective.

@carlosr428 The mesh screen could get blocked birds, trash, etc it would lower the air intake causing the plane to crash a fodded engine can still fly (not good for it though) but no intake=less power less power=lawn dart.
-
Look's safe enough, Alright TAKE OFF!
-
@undertake782 Yeah, but nobodys dumb enough to attempt it
-
Anyone seen my twister pliers???
-
The F-18 could have still flown like that.

why dont they just add those steel mesh filters on the Air inlets that they put on the engines when they test them on stands? i meen theyre gonna need to restrict the air flow to keep it sub sonic any ways so i dont think it would hurt the performance at all.

I have a couple guesses...
1: At that velocity, something the size of a jelly bean (or much smaller) would be like shooting a gun into the engine. To "fence off" objects that small you would need a very fine mesh... The surface area of that mesh would equate to a sizable blockage for the intakes...
2: The mesh itself, (when struck by an object moving that fast), would only add to the debris entering the engine...
Just a guess or two. I could be way off...
