Chief Instructor Tony Psaila demonstrates Wing Chun structure and how it can be used to break an opponent's structure in order to overcome an uppercut, straight punch, and incoming kick while on the floor.

This demonstration is from the IWCA's 34th Anniversary Open Day in Sydney on the 6th of October, 2007. Other demonstrations were performed by IWCA Chief Instructors and Instructors. Sigung Chu Shong Tin (Tsui Seung Tin), the Father of the IWCA, and his wife, Sipor, were present as Guests of Honour.

Tony Psaila is a Chief Instructor at Grandmaster Jim Fung's International Wing Chun Academy in Australia.

  • I have trained directly under Tony and can offer this knowledge.

Pulling up refers to extending the spine or straightening it. this connects the body as a single unit.

Rotating refers to relaxing the joints and letting them move freely to keep the body connected and utilise the entire body mass.

  • WOW!!!!! What a great demonstration!!!

  • That's just....I don't know.... amazing...

  • I like to see wing chung application :D

  • I like Tony Psalia's Wing Chun exposition -- it's absolutely fascinating. I'm just wondering... why is he talking in the singular but using plural conjugations? e.g. "if you someone is throwing multiple strike at you", "you keep blocking till the cow come home." Was it because the crowd was comprised of non-native English speakers?

  • I find it the hardest thing in the world to relax and that is what my Sifu keeps drilling into me, to relax! Years of muscle strength will do that, if you've never practiced Wing Chun before. Tony is great at demonstrating this principle. Great!!!

  • only wing chun which uses that kind of structure is actually "real" wing chun. and those schools who focus on bodystructure are mostly far better and especially cheaper than that WT or EBMAZ crap -.-"

they rip you off and you´ll learn nothing !! and if maybe noticed ... all the people who do in their videos a terrible job in using wing chun in a fight, mostly come from WT or EWTO!

  • @thechicat

To be honest it really matters if you have structure down already. The weighted backpack wont necessarily improve structure but will improve strength. You should make sure to have a proper structure before you add any weight to the stance. The secret to structure is relaxation and aligning with gravity. After your form is good and your body is "set" for proper structure then I think it is a great idea to add weight like that. Might want to look into a vest instead of backpack.

  • What do you think of wearing a back pack with 20lbs weights in it to improve structure, I wear it when I do Siu Lim Tao, or when I just stand in the Wing Chun stance, even when I do the walking chain punch's, please tell me what you think of that. Thank you

  • Good stuff. It's true, when people are playing (sparring) Wing Chun, and they're relaxed, it doesn't always look "pretty". It looks sloppy. But it's very deceptive in this way... if someone's structure is solid, and they can move/turn on their structure, that person is hard to deal with. I enjoy the system, and I enjoy learning about it as I develop. Onward and upward!

  • can you describe more of it? im soo interested of this relaxation method. now im in singapore and cannot find this kind of school, of course there are some wing chun school but not from chu shong tin lineage. peace and thanks

  • its amazing how your knowledge changes the more you train. I my comment a year on and even though it isn't wrong my understanding now is so different.
