Established in1975 by the Department of Wildlife on a twenty five acre coconut property on the Maha Oya river at Pinnawela. The orphanage was primarily designed to afford care and protection to the many baby elephants found in the jungle without their mothers and bring them up as nature intened. The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the bathing elephants from the broad river bank as the herd interacts socially, bathing and playing. The orphanage is open to the public daily, and all admission fees are used to look after the elephants.
