in which a reptile and an amphibian encounter a righteous man
--

After the assassination of JFK in the winter of 1963, Malcolm X was silenced by Elijah Mohammed for 90 days allegedly because of Malcolm's statement that JFK's assassination was "the chickens coming home to roost." Of course, this was a pretext on Elijah Mohammed's part, as Malcolm had said far more inflammatory things when he was in Mohammed's favor. The FBI decided to see if they could take advantage of the tension between Malcolm and Elijah Mohammed, and went to Malcolm's house to interrogate him.

However, unbeknownst to the FBI--notorious for their covert recordings of others-- Malcolm had hidden a reel-to-reel tape recorder under his couch that he activated with a light switch. Listen as the FBI agents employ flattery, bribery, and outright chicanery as they reveal their absolute ignorance of the character of the man they are speaking with.

Malcolm officially broke with the Nation of Islam in March 1964.

It is my understanding that this is rare audio, recorded from "Like It Is" with Gill Noble on ABC TV. I could very well be wrong about this, and welcome comments from anyone who knows more. A quick search of the internet found no mention of this audio or the television show it came from. If it isn't rare, I'll be happy to amend these notes. And if it is rare, it isn't any more, because now it's on YouTube!

antihostile has been steadily compiling an excellent archive of Malcolm X footage:

Check out Malcolm speaking after the suspension was over:

special thanks to Mike--audiophile, archivist, and all around great guy

UPDATE: So far the only record of this exchange anyone has mentioned was a transcript in a book. As far as I can tell, this means that one more missing piece has been restored to the record.

  • When a pickpocket meets a holy man, he sees only his pockets. We are dealing with scared, and insecure people who have turned their backs upon the sacred spirit of man. The spirit of love.

They cannot love what they fear. And their fear grows. There is not a person who has come to the forefront with a message of love, that has not been destroyed. And they ask, "where is this Jesus, this man of God." He is in the living spirit of those who know love. He is love. That's why they can't see him.

  • well put, pj. your comment touched my heart.

  • 5:15-5:35 is fucking genius! I'm gonna use that as an intro to my beat tape.

  • what a great idea. i'd love to hear it if you post it.

  • farrakhan said that he's a better man than malcolm-LMAO. do u think the arabs could give malcolm money to keep silent about the arab enslavement of the sudanses? truth of the matter is that mr. muhammad became jealous becuz malcolm worked his program better than him_lol. then mr.muhammad feared malcolm becuz he was revived pure garveyism (without religion) & became n.o.i's DIRECT competition. farrakhan wanted his place, so he preached his death. personally, i cant respect those 2 CROOKS!

  • heard, yash

  • This man is so AWSOME. I love him. What a man. This is the divide and conquer tactic that Malcolm talked about and white people use still today.

  • @ramzeze3 Malcolm wasn't a 'gangsta'. He was a black man that stood for something positive for his people. He was a gangsta when he was a nigga. When he became a black man, he put away childish things. Malcolm would be sick to see what became of our race. I know you meant well--or don't know any better, but please show some respect. And no, they don't make 'gees' like this today. However, you could become like him if you chose to put away the slang and gangsta mentality.
