i choose to mention SOTS because its the album by ATG thats still on the top 100 Metal Albums, that proves that they made quality music, but i get what you mean, i like every album they've made i don't really have a favourite so for me all their albums are "sacred" as you described it.
It's true we will never know what would've happened if they didn't quit but i still think that they would of made good music but not "ATG music". Like IF there's a huge contrast between the first and latest album

It's not like every album they did was sacred though. There are ATG fans who don't like their With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness at all, and others who don't like Slaughter of the Soul but think that that The Red in the Sky is Ours is their best. I like 'em all.
We can't know what they would have done, but I seriously doubt they would have tried to be as emo-friendly as In Flames became. Besides Dark Tranquillity stayed together and by 2002 on they were making the best music of their career!

Dont get me wrong, i understand how you feel and what you mean but i actually think it was for the best that they quit back in the SOTS era. They quit when they were at the very peak of their career.
ATG is the band i respect the most for doing what they did. In comparison to In Flames if ATG continued after SOTS they would of (probably) ended up like IF have now. Dont get me wrong i like In Flames very much but IMO IF arent what they used to be. I liked the old IF more.

They should have stayed together, The Haunted is a pale shadow of what ATG was or even what they could have been.
