If you actually understood Sylar's character at all, than you would understand that him being able to get powers through empathy rather than killing allows for him to satisfy his hunger while trying to redeem himself at the same time. He doesn't want to be a killer, but he can't control it. His intuitive aptitude allows for his brain to mimic the chemical and physiological reactions in the brain which give people their abilities, allowing him to get them as well. ok so they've nullified peters powers then, if anyone can get any power whenever they want... in fact they've nullified the whole of season 1 which was based on the premise of genetic code and scientific theory. now just feeling empathic gives you powers?!

it pisses me off that they completely nullified sylars reason to be sylar, by saying "oh you can get powers just through empathy". what bollocks! it makes no sense for a start, the powers are supposed to be genetic... and additionally, it makes for unrealistic and crap storyline! grr!
