The ego they're referring to is the lower one. The higher one is the one that must prevail, the one that causes real good to one self, through truth, serenity and peace.

@neb0jsha It doesn't actually say it in the film, but in an interview with the film-maker and leading actor, they say that Sam Gold represents Satan. Regardless, Sam Gold will have you believe whatever he wants you too, as long as you keep believing that that voice in your head, telling you he doesn't exist, is coming from you and not him.
