  • Interesting. I learned a quite distinct version of this song, but still bearing marked similarities and carrying the same title -though Usher's Well is never mentioned by name.

  • I also forgot to say... The boys were traveling , and no one knew their mother was rich. So, the birch crosses ( I was taught) were placed on their grave. Part of her anger was finding out not only they were dead, but how they were buried. Another person once told me , hats were hung on their crosses, so if they were of birch. I thoroughly, enjoy your videos. I feel like a child during story hour. I am picky about who reads to me and you are the bomb, as my kids say. lol

  • I wanted to give you some information I read... The birch was what crosses for the poor, were made of. It symbolizes death ,as I was told. So, I took them to be from the grave , as a metaphor. Birch being a type of timber, a tree's wood. When I hear birch in their hair, I see a rotting grave marker ( their crosses), in their hair.
