Hazel Tindall from The Shetland Isles competed in Minneapolis USA 16-17 February 2008 for the coveted title of 'International Speed Knitter'. She outknitted the Guinness World Record Hold Miriam Tegels with 262 stitches in 3 minutes. To read more see www.ukhandknitting.com

I think that it was that they competed head-to-head and Hazel beat her with 262 stitches... meaning I guess that either Miriam had a bad day, or she doesn't have the lasting speed of Hazel. Think of sprinting vs. long distance.

Yes, Hazel holds the current World Record. The Guinness World record is held by Miriam Tegals (2006). Hazel Tindall beat her record in February 2008 in an International competition held in the USA.
