Bill opens up a computer hard drive to show how it is engineered. He describes how the "head" reads the magnetic information on the disk; reveals how a voice coil motor and a slider controls the position of that head. He also discusses how smooth a disk must be, and briefly mentions a mathematical technique that allows engineers to pack more information on a drive.

  • Why pick an old Dell Dimension? Find that in a junk-heap somewhere?

  • Yes ... we got it from campus surplus!

  • It just blows my mind how any human being can consider this not interesting. It's so amazing it moves me, like art.

  • I'm not sure if you do videos by request, but I'd love to see ones on Solid State Drives as well as LED monitors. All your stuff is great and easy to follow.

  • i dont know what amazes me more, the video itself or the fact that it has portuguese subtitles. :'D

  • Wow!!! I love this stuff, never knew that!! It's amazing that they are using algorithms to increase memory storage!!

  • Truly a wonderful, and succinctly presented, hunk o' knowledge.

Thanks for shining a spotlight on how amazing this truly is!

  • Oh, so that's how your computer knows if your HDD is working...

  • could you do a special about computers in total?

(ps don't know if u already did)

  • I love these videos. So interesting!

I also like the background music. Anyone know where I can find it?

  • The funny thing is my family uses one as the main computer.

  • I wish I watched this instead of tearing apart my working drive because I felt the need to see inside it.

  • I hate magnetic hard drives, they are all unreliable they all die someday.. you have to keep migrating to a newer one as the older one ages and wears.

  • Great videos! You should do simple things like keyboards and mouse. You have the uncanny ability to make things clear and interesting.
