Gegründet wurde Midnattsol 2002 von Carmen Elise Espenæs und Christian Hector. Kurz darauf stießen Daniel Droste, Birgit Öllbrunner, Chris Merzinsky und Daniel Fischer hinzu. 2003 veröffentlichten sie ihr erstes Demo und überzeugten damit mehrere Plattenfirmen. 2004 folgte das erste Album mit dem Namen "Where Twilight Dwells". In ihren Texten geht es zumeist um norwegische Legenden. 2005 traten Midnattsol unter anderem beim Feuertanz Festival, beim Summer Breeze, beim Wave-Gotik-Treffen sowie beim Metal Female Voices Festival auf, 2006 standen sie beim Mera Luna Festival sowie ein weiteres Mal beim Metal Female Voice Festival in Wieze auf der Bühne. Dieser zweite Auftritt in Folge ist den Zuschauern zu verdanken, die die Band mit dem Titel "aufregendste Live-Band 2005" ehrte

Midnattsol is a Symphonic metal and folk metal band from Germany and Norway, The band was formed in 2002 by Singer Carmen Elise Espenæs and Guitarist Christian Hector.

Their sound is essentially Symphonic metal, with some folk influences in the melodies. Although their sound can be classified as symphonic metal, the band prefers to call their style 'Nordic folk metal' because of the folk elements in their music and occasional Norwegian lyrics. Their lyrics are largely based on Norwegian folk tales. Their first full-length album, Where Twilight Dwells, was released in 2005; their new album, Nordlys, was released on March 28, 2008.

Midnattsol means "midnight sun" in Norwegian. Although their sound can be classified as Symphonic metal, the band prefers to call their style "Nordic folk metal" because of the folk elements in their music and occasional Norwegian lyrics.

Guitarists Daniel Droste and Christian Hector recently joined forces with Stephan Adolph to form Ahab, a German funeral doom band.

Chris Merzinsky and Birgit Öllbrunner are also playing in the band R:I:P.

Carmen Elise Espenæs is the younger sister of Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull, former vocalist of Theatre of Tragedy and current vocalist for Leaves' Eyes.

O som é essencialmente sinfônico, com influências folk em suas melodias. Suas letras são basicamente baseadas em lendas Vikings. Seu primeiro álbum oficial, Where Twilight Dwells, foi lançado em 2005. Seu trabalho mais recente, Nordlys, foi lançado dia 28 de março de 2008.

Midnattsol (O Sol da Meia Noite), simboliza o fenômeno que ocorre na Noruega. Embora seu som seja Metal Sinfônico, a banda prefere ser classificada por Folk Metal ou Celtic Metal por causa dos elementos da cultura escandinava em suas canções.

A vocalista Carmen Elise Espenæs é irmã de Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull, vocalista da banda de metal sinfônico e folk metal germano-norueguesa Leaves' Eyes.

Os guitarristas Daniel Droste e Christian Hector recentemente se uniram a Stephan Adolph para formar o Ahab, uma banda alemã de Death Metal.

Chris Merzinsky e Birgit Öllbrunner também estão tocando na banda R.I.P.
