From "a Few Days in September". Long stretches of the film are quite boring, but the interaction between Juliette Binoche and the two young leads makes it worth watching, uneasily co-existing with the less than intriguing spy story...

  • The girls only hate America (i know its a film). But what wars do we cause? Let me see: WWII (liberated Europe) Korea (liberated S. Korea) Vietnam (tried to liberate S. Vietnam) Panama (ok that was messed up) Iraq (we shouldn't have but the Iraqis at least have democaracy) Afghan (they attacked us) ...yes we do consume too much also...but less now...and we care about people, rights, the environment, and the world.

The WSJ had an editorial entitled "Norway or the Highway" back in October of 2009, in which the author talks about what the Nobel Peace Prize tells us about Europe's values:

"For Europe, prosperity had become an end in itself. It is ironic that the Europeans regard the Americans as obsessed with money when it is the Europeans who put economic considerations over all other things. "

  • "But the Europeans mean something different when they talk about money. For the Europeans, money isn't about piling it higher and higher. Instead, money is about security. Their economic goal is not to become wealthy but to be comfortable."

  • "Today's Europeans value economic comfort above all other considerations. After Sept. 11, the United States seemed willing to take chances with the Europeans' comfortable economic condition that the Europeans themselves didn't want to take. They loathed George W. Bush for doing so."

  • There is a book entitled "Killing Hope" which chronicles all the interventions of the U.S. since the end of WWII. The U.S. government has had its fingers in almost everywhere. There are all sorts of perspectives from which to consider that fact, from both the left and the right, but three things that are primary I think are...

  • (a) there is usually a hidden agenda behind the overt agenda, meaning that the actual reason for going to war is different than the one given to the public

    (b) the U.S. too often builds up or subsidizes powers it eventually determines to fight (such as Iraq)

    (c) the legal authority of the government to conduct such sweeping interventions is questionable

    (d) the rules of engagement usually prevent the U.S. from achieving total victory, resulting in more casualties and complications further on...

  • americans can suk my ding ding

  • Shall we talk about France's shenanigans across the globe for the past five decades? Rwanda, the Congo, Chad, Algeria, Vietnam, arming Arab nations with weapons? In what possible position are you European in to preach at us? At best we're both part of the same hypocrisy. And what's with the overt racism towards the Japanese?

  • @mslatts68 yes, but from what i remember there were news reports that many of the terrorists came form Afghan. Then we were bombing them. Then later we invaded them. Not sure why exactly as the bombing should have been enough i would think. Then the Iraq fiasco happened. What's interesting (just saying) the actual invasion was near perfect...but we had no clue how or why to occupy a foreign land.

  • @tmmy773 we were never told that they attacked us remember the speech "you are with the terrorist or you are with us if u harbor or protect terrorist we will not differentiate you from the terrorist " GWB

  • @mslatts68 You are right the Afghan people didn't attack us...that is what we were told. It was radical elements within. Was an invasion necessary or moral? hard to say yes..i realize this more now.

  • @tmmy773 the afgans didnt attack us and we wouldnt have attacked them either we asked them to turn over the criminals responible and they said no so they had a chance to divert war

  • @conspiracytheorist77 Those points are well made. We have to have more accountability and debate before we interfere or meddle in other nations' affairs.

Sometimes intervention may be necessary but it should be the exception and not the rule.

  • @TheMsEconomic yes, we did support a dictator in Cuba .that was wrong..we know that. and let millions of Cubans emigrate to US .We were told Afghanistan attacked us.if they didn't then no we should not have attacked them. i'm not trying to be arrogant but fair. I sad we were wrong to invade Iraq (above) almost all Americans realize this. all i said was at least they have a democracy. What about Syria? The people want the gov't out and have no say but get shot at by soldiers.

  • @conspiracytheorist77 yes, Europe is also concerned with money...but to be fiar they do have a certain "culture" We can be militaristic..but they have been also when they had power...look at French rev...they behaved like savages. Not to say everything we do is right..we do make many mistakes..the problem is they can't see we're not always the "bad guys" ..i think deep down they can't recognize we have our own "culture" too.

  • @tmmy773

You just interfere in every single conflict in the world, you "liberate" the side you need.

Remember Cuba, when americans supported a Dictator (Batista).

    And WTF Afghanistan attacked you?!

It was terrorist and not the afghans. Stop being arrogant.

And Iraq.. It's wonderfull to have freedom when your house is ruined and you live in poor condition. What a beautiful act.
