This was my first horror movie. My dad had this on the same tape as Looney Tunes which he had recorded for me. One day when I was 5, when I had watched Looney Tunes, just as I was going to turn it off, I realized that there was a movie after Looney Tunes. I decided to watch the movie. Boy was it scary! But there was something strangely compelling about it.

Many years later, I was tracking down Fulci films as I had just seen Lizard in a Woman's Skin. I found the Gates of Hell trilogy among others. There was something strangely familiar with House by the Cemetery that I couldn't put my finger on. It wasn't until I found the old Looney Tunes tape that I realized it was indeed The House by the Cemetery I had seen as a kid. I didn't remember it was so gory!

About the film, I know many will disagree with me, but I strongly feel that House by the Cemetery is superior to City of the Living Dead. Granted, The Beyond is the best of them all, but I think City of the Living Dead lacked more visuality and suspense. House by the Cemetery is more atmospheric. And I love how Fulci uses the children theme to represent innocence in this movie.

  • I recently saw Ghosthouse by Umberto Lenzi which is the only other film to feature the same house in HBTC but Lenzi actually films inside of the real house compared to Fulci who filmed the interiors in a studio and only used the house for exteriors.

  • to be honest fulci could've done without the gore, the film's just that great. i dont have a problem with gore just the more was fantastic without the use of it. i forgot the gory material was there half the time.

  • I've been saying the same thing for a very long time. Though his movies would sadly not be as popular if it wasn't for their notorities..

  • i have been in the actual house!! its in scituate, massachusettes (u.s.a.) my friend used to live in it for years (in the upstairs part) and believe me that whole area is creepy as hell!! i used to walk home through the woods at night ( there is no cemetary though )

  • You ever checked the basement? xD

  • i did not understand what mrs freudstein said to the children at the end.

  • I love the soundtrack.

  • @StefPhoenixOoORising oh my god he must be freaked out by dr. Freudstein

  • Excelent movie, my brother rented the video tape when we were only kids, but i didn't forgot , thanks!

  • @coolkidcash15 Apparently according to Fulci, the kid was in the care of the ghosts now, to walk the forests of sadness. Not dead or alive...really depressing though, haha. Even he admitted that it was a depressing ending.

  • @DetrimentDaSuffering He needed the gore to get in magazines like Fangoria, also it raised box office hearing about someones eye getting poked out, etc. I doubt these movies would have gotten made without the gore.

  • so did the boy die or did the ghost girl help him escape?? i'm lost...

  • bellísima Movie, un tesoro.

  • i ist saw this when i was about 10 or 11 it allways stuck with me the only flaw with this film imo is the english dubing id love to view this film in italian

  • Fulci at 5 yrs? Bravo!
