@gottamatch She was a great lady. Yes, radio is kind of hard to identify with in today's immediacy of television and video. We had to use something called "imagination"! Arlene had one of those dignified, yet warm radio voices. I'm trying to think of someone to compare her to. In a way, she was Betty White's predecessor. Betty took over in TV where Arlene had stopped in radio. That's not quite right. Arlene was unique. No one like her has come along since. True class!

@weightfeather1 Thanks for that :) since that comment I've read lots about Ms Francis, but it's still hard to understand 'radio' personalities in this day and age... I'd have loved to see her in more motion pictures. She's just grand, isn't she!

@gottamatch Arlene was a radio performer and she had a prolific career playing all sorts of large and small radio parts. She had hosted several of her own shows and she was a known "personality" They chose her for WML because they wanted to balance her warm and witty personality against Dorothy's inquisitive and analytical demeanor. WML was where Arlene earned her biggest fame.

That is Walk Softly Stranger, and I agree it is a wonderful film!

The caption says "Dinner at Eight", but Dorothy says the play is "Once More with Feeling"
-
That was goofy fun!
I think it would've been a privilege to work with Arlene Francis.

Oh, this was priceless! Wonderful vocal disguise by Mr. Cotten (Not "Cotton"). Loved how it totally threw Arlene off. Thank you for posting this.

What an under rated gem. This man could ACT. Total class. Never saw him in a film that wasn't brilliant. And he never won an Oscar?
