Hit-Of-The-Week records, made with the patented Durium formula
on top of a cardboard surface, were the cheapest and best-selling
records at the outset of the Great Depression.

In 1932 Durium was closing most of its New York facilities and moving the business to England, where Durium Products (G.B.) Ltd. had been marketing American Hit-Of-Th-Week pressings under the Durium label . The explanation was that a newly imposed 5% federal tax—amounting to 3/4¢ per record—made manufacturing "impossible.

Recording: The New York Twelve - You're Driving Me Crazy (Donaldson/Kahn), Hit-Of-The-Week 1930

Who the "New York 12" were - I don't know. Probably, it was a pseudonym.

  • where can i find that picture of all the people in the street n the 2 cars

  • Ain't it grand?

  • I have a cardboard record (Hit Of The Week # 1153) of The New York Twelve "Let's Get Friendly". Trying to find out the year on it????

  • Yeah, 2009 really competes.......

  • You're probably thinking of "McKinney's Cotton Pickers" {Don Redman, conductor/arranger}, 'chalo'. They had a more driven, "jazzier" sound in their performances, though. Thanks!

  • "fromthesidelines": Wow! LOL. Leave it to you to fill in those intricate details. Thanks much. And what a great old sound. There was a group from that period, " ...??? Cotton Pickers...(???)" (I forgot the actual name) that sounded just like this.

  • This was recorded in December 1930, and issued in January 1931. I believe "The New York Twelve" was a pseudonym for Bert Hirsch's "Hit Of the Week" orchestra; Frank Luther is the uncredited vocalist. This is also available on Archeophone's "The Complete 'Hit Of the Week' Recordings, Vol. 2" CD, 'Nebula' [see their website for more information about the other tracks]..
