In November 2001, upset by recent manipulation of HIV infection statistics by the SF health department and sensational reporting by the SF Chronicle, Michael Petrelis and David Pasquarelli began a late night phone campaign to those people responsible for the inaccuracies. The time, months after 9/11 and with terrorism fears pervading American life, was all wrong for such telephone activism, and those fears were stoked by police investigators, at the urging of many powerbrokers. After hearing warrants were being sought for their arrests, both activists went on the lam. To avoid the possibility of arrest, and with a naive hope his attorney could arrange a deal with the cops, Petrelis decided hiding out for a week in Berkeley was his best option. This video captures his reflections of that crazy time in his life and his experiences on the lam.
