Widely regarded as one of Australias most outstanding sopranos, Emma Matthews is a Principal Artist with Opera Australia. Equally at home with opera and concert repertoire, Emma appears regularly with all the major Australian orchestras and opera companies, as well as at major festivals. She is the recipient of Green Room, Mo and Helpmann Awards.
In 2010 Emma Matthews will make her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in the title role of Janáceks The Cunning Little Vixen to be conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras and her concert debut with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo in Mahlers Fourth Symphony. Later that year she will also make her debut with Vladimir Ashkenazy, who conducts a performance of the Mahler with the Sydney Symphony.
But Emmas versatility including roles in Bergs Lulu and Richard Mills Batavia and The Love of the Nightingale. The role of the Nightingale of the latter was conceived for Emma and closes this CD, her first in an exclusive solo signing to Universal Music Australia (Deutsche Grammophon) and ABC Classics. This will be the first time an Australian artist makes a solo record for Deutsche Grammophon, widely considered to be the worlds most prestigious classical record label.
Recorded in September 2008 in Monte Carlo, the album highlights Romantic opera heroines for which Emma has received glowing praise. Included are key moments from some of these operas the Doll Song from Les Contes dHoffmann, the Bell Song from Lakmé, great scenes from Lucia di Lammermoor and Hamlet, as well as fearless and thrilling coloratura moments in the Proch Theme and Variations and Bernsteins Glitter and be gay. There are two world premieres on the disc the Nightingales Song at the close of Richard Mills The Love of the Nightingale and Calvin Bowmans song Now touch the air softly.
Conducting the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo is Australian-born, UK-based Brad Cohen, who graduated from St. Johns College, Oxford, before studying with Sergiu Celibidache and Leonard Bernstein.

glad to see ABC Classics promoting her. If they do their job, there's no denying Matthew's place as the next superstar. Her resources are awesome!

To my knowledge Sutherland did try a public high F in Sonnambula for one performance in 1962. Also I believe Sills did the high f's in zauberflote. In fact, she complained that the whole night she worried about those notes.

Sutherland sang both roles Streich fell ill half way through the run. Sutherland originally sang Herz and Streich Silberklang. Sutherland changed from Herz to Silberklang half way through the season and Labay took over Herz.

Thus Sutherland's role did NOT include the high F's...as those notes belong to the role of Mme. Herz...not Silberklang.

Yes, it is two separate roles and because of Streich's illness Sutherland had to change from Mme Herz to Mme Silberklang. Sutherlands' role was covered by Naida Labay.
