The lick of the day for Friday is a British blues-rock phrase which illustrates the art of scale combining. During this line two characteristic scales are played back-to-back: E Major Pentatonic (E-F#-G#-B-C#) and E Minor Pentatonic (E-G-A-B-D). Note the particular guitar device of playing the same 'box' shape in two positions to achieve this result. The first portion is situated in the 9th position (major pentatonic) while the final section is in the 12th position (minor pentatonic). Both work in E and sound very effective when alternated within a melody. This is a common and useful procedure to derive a great amount of music from a single fingered shape, and is one of the inherent advantages of the guitar fretboard. Also noteworthy is the held bend in the second section. Variants of this figure have been employed by practically every blues and rock guitarist in music history.
