i dont get it though why would you just develop instead of protecting a pawn with pawns?

@druglover200 White favors gambiting the pawn off rather than wasting time defending it in order to do 2 things; as with most gambits, black tends to be lagging in development if he/she decides to hold on to the pawn captured later (or to capture in the first place). As a result, white gains rapid development while black is making moves to maintain the pawn in material. The other advantage is that black is giving up the only centralized pawn for the less-ideal c pawn.
