  • Doric Citadel.

  • Magna Graecia is perfectly lonely.

  • Having spent time in Laconia and sparta I saw a different kind of Greek, dark complexion or olive skin with black hair.. I think the Dorians had these traits. Especially in Leonidio where they still speak tsakonika. Also the men tend to have a widows peak balding pattern instead of a thinning crown.

  • The question though remains: are these Greeks descendants of the ancient Dorians? Of medieval Byzantine Greeks? Or of Greeks fleeing the Ottomans? The common logic says all 3 of them. However for Byzantines there is no known wave of Greek populations from Greece to Italy but the opposite is attested (Emperors moved Greek Italian populations to Greece to repopulate it after the Bulgarian raids). Also, Greeks fleeing the Ottomans mainly established as merchants & teachers in north Italy not south

  • SteveBKNY... good question. But first, the Magna Grecia dialect is not at all Koine... it is naturally a highly latinised Greek dialect but has lots of doriscisms that are not linked to any italian language accidental influence. Moreover, from the few things I see all Dorian-originated communities share some little thingies like they tend to pronounce "K" like "TS", a trait not found in other regions.

  • @papagamias theyre dorian but they speak Koine greek? Is that cuz of the church? True Dorians are darker like the maniates in lakonia i think..

  • Magna Graecia is elegantly beautiful.

  • my great geat grandfather came back to Greece from Calabria after the liberation, A big salut to my Dorian brothers in the south

  • exactly as you said it.. Mother and daughter!
