I won't debate the nuclear winter - I studied nuclear weaponry and nuclear power in college. Yes, I agree that a global nuclear exchange would be a catastrophe for our planet. My argument was with the "couple of nukes" statement. A couple of nukes (even with your "full payload" deployment scenario) detonated in one region would not destroy our atmosphere.

@jayci68 The destructive force doesn't come from detonating one here and there. The problems arise because nuclear weapons force debris 30 miles into the atmosphere, nuclear winter refers to the increased amount of particulate in the atmosphere that drastically cools the planet. Also all the tests were single bombs, no country has ever actually detonated the full payload of an ICBM, since the generally carry 8 warheads, and they will certainly fire more than one.
