I usually like Rick Mercer's take on things, but treating gay public figures as though they're obligated to come out of the closet was going way overboard. We're not sure how much effect public figures coming out would have on attitudes toward homosexuality, and at the end of the day, bullies who lose that excuse might just latch onto another.

The Globe And Mail put it well when they responded by saying "the job of protecting gay teens or anyone else from bullying falls to everyone."

And those "anti-gay groups" who use them as examples deserve 100% of the blame for pushing such stereotypes in the first place. It makes no sense to blame anyone else.

People in the music industry don't count because the majority of them are too outrageous. They're used as examples as to why "gays are bad" by anti-gay groups because of their extremes. People need to see gays do the same shit they're doing every day and have those who are in power, come out and show them how being gay affected nothing in their lives. Hiding, btw, only gives these groups more power and gives gay kids even more of a reason to be afraid.
