Denise's POV
I ran into the kitchen and saw Lexi lying in the floor next to a small puddle of her own blood. She was crying and screaming, gripping her upper arm tightly. A knife lay on the floor next to her, blood covering the tip. I looked around to see if there were any clues as to what happened, and I found Nick curled up into a ball under the table crying. He was crying out "I'm sorry!" over and over again. I ignored him for the moment and rushed over to Lexi's side. I grabbed a clean dish towel off the counter and pressed it against her arm in attempt to stop most of the bleeding.
"I--I'm sorry Mommy! I didn't mean to hurt her!" Nick cried, still hugging his knees under the kitchen table.
"It's fine baby boy. Just go wash of your hands," I sighed, not really paying attention to him.
"O-okay," he stuttered, not being able to tell if I was mad at him or not. He crawled out from his hiding place and dashed out of the room as quickly as his legs would carry him.
"Mommy!!" Lexi wailed. "It huuuurtss!"
"I know sweetheart."
"I feel dizzy."
"Don't fall asleep sweetheart. You can't right now!"
I continued to press the cloth against her arm, but soon she was bleeding through it. I got another cloth and told her to hold it on her arm while I ran up and got the first aid kit. I ran up the stairs quickly and went into the bathroom to get the kit from under the sink. Joe was lying on the floor sleeping again, but I couldn't bother with him quite yet. I ran back down the stairs and found Lexi exactly where I left her. I quickly took out a think gauze pad and two gauze rolls.
"Mommy? What are you doing?" she asked me.
"I'm fixing you're arm," I smiled, taking out disinfectant spray as well. I shook the can and sprayed it on her wound. She shot up in pain and yelped as tears gathered in her eyes once again.
"Owwww! Mommy! It huuuuurrrrtsss!" she sobbed, inching away from me.
"I'm sorry sweetheart, but it needed to be cleaned. I didn't mean to hurt you," I apologized, setting the gauze pad in her arm and starting to secure it in place with the gauze rolls. "Is it too tight?" I asked her, wanting to make sure I wasn't cutting off circulation.
"No."
"Alright." I secured the bandage with a strip of surgical tape and stood up. I helped her up and led her to the couch. "Just lie down and rest for a bit. You need to gain back some of that blood you lost. You're lucky you didn't lose too much." She nodded, and I walked back upstairs to check on Joe and Kevin.
I ascended up the stairs and hurried down to the bathroom only to see Joe vomiting once again. He finished just as I walked in, and he stood up shakily.
"Let me help you back to your room," I offered, allowing him to lean on me. "Feeling any better?"
"Noooo! Gimme some Advil!"
"Stay in bed. I'll be right back." I walked quickly back into the bathroom and got out the Advil bottle. I took the bottle back to him room and poured two capsules into his hand. He took a water bottle off his nightstand and swallowed the pills.
"Thanks," he croaked through his dry throat.
"You're welcome. Close your eyes and get some rest," I advised, setting the medicine next to his water bottle and walking out the door.
I went down to Kevin's room next. He was sitting up in bed reading.
"Kev, you need to get some rest," I said, walking over to him.
"I can't sleep mom," he whined, slipping a bookmark into the page he was reading and setting down the book onto his bedside table.
"What's wrong?"
"I feel too sick."
"Do you want anymore medicine?" I asked. He shook his head. "They lie down and try to get some more rest. You need it."
"Fine," he croaked. I smiled and tucked him in before leaving his room. I walked into the hall and heard Nick and Dani scream "MOM!" from downstairs. I quickly picked up my pace and raced back down to the living room.
