Confuciusornis is a genus of crow-sized, primitive, birds from the Early Cretaceous of China, approximately 120 million years ago. Like modern birds, Confuciusornis had a toothless beak, but close relatives of modern birds such as Hesperornis and Ichthyornis were toothed, indicating that the loss of teeth occurred convergently in Confuciusornis and living birds. It is the oldest known bird to have a beak.[1] It was named after the Chinese moral philosopher Confucius (551-479 B.C.E.).
Recognized species are C. sanctus (the type species), C. dui, C. chuonzhous and C. suniae (the latter two being possibly synonymous with C. sanctus). A close relative, Changchengornis hengdaoziensis lived in the same time and region. Changchengornis also possessed the long tail feathers, as well as a noticeable downy coat of feathers.

  • Hey, I'm looking for a living bird with these characteristics.

I saw it while in the Amazonas. At the river.

They told me it was quite common, I've also seen some documentaries on discovery channel. I think they have "fingers" when they are born, but they fall afterwards.

They look pretty much the same as 0:01 and are all brown.

    I saw them in Venezuela.

Can you give me any advice on where to look for their name?

  • I have no idea sorry, your best bet is wikipedia or some bird encyclopedia.

  • @Gabgett It was only after I wrote that comment that I realised someone else had already answered you lol, so you probably knew all about the bird anyway. Sorry about that :)

  • @Oddity1991 Indeed, that is exactly the bird I was looking for!

  • @Gabgett The name of the bird you described is the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin). It's young are born with a claw on each forelimb which they use to climb amongst the branches of trees. They are herbivorous and only found in South America. Fortunately they aren't endangered at the moment either so they're quite common.
