The government in the UK is spending millions on trying to open up education opportunities to more people.

Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have both put education at the heart of their political agendas. The result, it seems, is a bigger gap between the rich and poor and a Britain with decreased opportunities and less choice for those on lower incomes.

Do the people who run the education system really care about its inherent inequality? Or is the education system just reproducing inequalities in our country?

  • the truth is, if you are white, male, able-bodied, middle class and you're being taught by a white, male, able-bodied, middle class system, then you are going to do well out of it.

if you're not, then you are screwed

  • i think that the real problem is educations inability to adapt.

the universities are consistently trying to adapt the poor to them, blaming attainment and therefore taking no real responsibility for the lack of equality.

what should really be happening is that universities should be adapting and changing the way that they teach, so that it can be of benefit to more people.

this wont happen because the people who succeed in the current system end up running it and want to keep it the same

  • why would you want to change something that help keeps society the way it is!!!

i think that it is incredible how conservative the university system really is, given that it's supposed to have the best and most liberal thinkers.

  • what a sarcasm... while majority of politicians are emphasizing the importance of education, yet the reality is too turbulent to achieve one's dream. Shame on education !!!

  • i agree, i think that the whole education system needs a complete rethink

  • Let the masses be dumb as f...k and you can govern them as sheep

  • and also, if we give the same opportunity and resources to everyone, who is going to do the low paid jobs!

no wonder so many working class people completely reject the education system-- it pretends to be helping, but really it is deliberately rejecting them

  • Education, WITH OUT MOTIVATION ..

    Is pointless...

  • "education" will just lead to massive debt and a population thinking that there to good for a normal job. I don't believe in the "there's only dumb people because there not educated theory".

  • If you can afford it. lol

  • Labour started to destroy education in the 1960s when it kept pushing to destroy the meritocratic system of education in favour of the marxist inspired Comprehensives. That is partly why more poor children are trapped in sync estates and failing because they arent GETTING THE GRADES and stuck with a system where how much you can pay (private, catchment) rather than ability

I suggest people look up Anthony Crosland this is partly who the blame for destroying education lies with.

  • @loftysbridge pt2.. they and you expect systems and institutions to spend all their time adapting to you rather than u accepting the system and adopting to it. i believe in non-multicultural diversity. if u go to school from a multicultural non-white perspective, ur going to suck or pick a largely useless major like african studies. what fortune 500 company really needs that? noone is ever honest with most non-whites, feminists and radical liberals as to how things really work due to fear!

  • @loftysbridge hmmm, if ur black middle class, male or female, able-bodied familiar with the middle class system, u 2 will do fine. how do u educated barack and michele obama? ur argument is so passe. i'm blak from a foreign country on west africa and i kicked ass from 5th grade thru now. my parents werent rich or middle class but like with most immigrant far easterners made it clear they wanted me to adopt those values. prob with many non-whites is they fight, blame +resist everything.

  • @sovietninja3 You can also give yourself a degree and see how many jobs that will get you - ha!

  • It is amazing how much the UK and the US are alike! The great multinational corporations have created a world that suits them on both sides of the Atlantic and just like in America instead of blaming the rich and powerful - you blame women, ethnic minorities, Martians, whatever! Wake up -- do you really think that the fact that this is happening in every Western capitalist society is purely incidental! Stand up and fight the corporate powers that would enslave us all - not each other!

  • @loftysbridge How does that explain all of the white, male, able-bodied, middle class who are unemployed and doing rather badly. The system is not designed for them; it's designed for female, middle classed people. Sure enough the most prosperous positions are held by men but most men don't occupy those and women occupy almost all of the well off jobs.
