A profile of Marcelo Rainero. Not exactly how I would have cut it, but again, classroom assignments continue to be saddled with certain limitations and requirements preventing me from making it better.

  • In order to form an opinion, one must do their research and get concrete facts. A 2 minute video would hardly represent the depth and complexity of any martial art. Kuntao Silat de Thouars is a very complex martial art that requires years of study and hard training.

Marcelo has studied martial arts or more specifically Imua Shantung Kuntao and Kuntao Silat de Thouars for about 30 years. He is also an Iraqi war veteran having served for 27 months. He knows combat as well as anyone.

  • Just an FYI for those who do not know the Master teacher of Marcelo's(and mine) martial art. His name is Willem de Thouars, a 73 year old master, who started training when he was 5 years old in Java. He now regularly does seminars in Stockholm, Guadalajara, Boston, Miami, and many other areas. Anyone who is in to southern Chinese or Indonesian martial arts knows of Willem de Thouars (search Youtube or Google him). Kuntao Silat de Thouars is an amazing martial art with some exceptional people!

  • To catch up on a few of the older posts. Kuntao is an ancient southern chinese martial art that has a basis in Fujian, China. It is older still. We train in Hakka Kuntao. These have been a wondering people for centuries ultimately immigrating to south China(poss from Mongolia) and eventually spreading out across the islands and beyond. Early on Kuntao and Silat clashed. Over time they meshed in to a single martial. It is a mixture of arts as listed below w/ Ba Gua(or Pa Qua) & Kung Fu.

  • Mider999, yes to answer your question. It is my understanding that Pak Victor de Thouars, Master Willem's younger brother, is considered by Dan Inosanto to be his Silat teacher and that he considers Willem to be his Kuntao teacher. The 2 younger de Thouars brothers and Guru Dan go back many years.

  • @clubcryptic Is this the same Kuntao that Dan Inosanto teaches because in his website it says that Kuntao is one of the arts he teaches along with silat, and kali etc etc.

  • @momobena i know this is an old comment but if you still want to know kun tao is the combination of silat ,tai chi, wing chun, and some other one that i have no clue how to spell but its pronounced like" back waa"

  • I was told kuntao is a hybrid between native silat systems of Malaysia, Indonesia and southern Phillipines and introduced southern chinese kung fu...

  • @carcosa kun tao is very humble. i train under a student of Willem de Thouars it does not matter what people think, kun tao is real and real deadly

  • @momobena Kuntao originated in Fujian, China. from there it moved to the Philippines and later to Indonesia. Pencak Silat is a fighting form originated in Indonesia. Since Indonesians don't like Chinese (just look at the massacre from 1998 where Malay-indonesians slaugthered hundreds of Chinese-Indonesians) a rivalrz occured. In the Philippines no rivalry between Arnis and Kuntao happened.

  • watch videos lol.

  • What's the difference between Kuntao and Pencak Silat? I hear there's been a long-term rivalry between the 2 in Indonesia
