  • I think people are judging bass players on solo chops alone. That's just the icing on the cake. Most of your hot "world-class" solo monsters can't play a mean shuffle or hold down a fat pocket if their lives depended on it. There's some bass players that will blow you away with out ever taking a solo. Listen to all of those great tracks Will Lee recorded... Classics! Besides, Pianist, Drummers , etc. prefer that big bottom and deep understanding of the role of the BASS...

  • Here's some I really like: Back to Back by the Brecker Brothers, What a difference a day makes (LP) by Esther Phillips, Beck and Sanborn (CTI), and the track Dejavu by Dionne Warwick. There's hundreds of others, many that are classic bass parts. He did a few albums with Gary Burton that showcases impeccable time, taste, and tone as well...
