Happens in Australia, too - ex-stoners with political clout are often swayed by conservatives. Smith might change her mind if faced with jail time herself.
George W Bush would never have been able to go to college or become president under his own draconian drug laws. My own Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, says he has never tried pot but has defended colleagues who have done so.
