@Kaagh178 I didn't know about Peri until very recently, so I'll give you her (even though, strangely, they had an English actress play her...were there no Americans in England in the 80s? :P ). But I still don't count one-offs as true companions. Just my opinion.
@IceMetalPunk Alice Hemingway as first ever (albeit non canonical) American companion? What about Peri Brown, Cassie Rice, Jimmy Stalkingwolf? OK, I know you don't count companions that appeared only once as proper companions (i.e Cassie and Jimmy from 'Dreamland'), but I do. Jackson Lake, Lady Christina De Souza and Adelaide Brooke were all one off officially certified companions for the 2008 Christmas Special and 2009 specials. Plus I support the Brigadier's queried companion status as well.
@kylephantom4 If Donna didn't show up after the Racnoss wedding episode, I wouldn't consider her a companion, either. In my humble opinion, you need to be with the Doctor more often than once to be a true companion.
@IceMetalPunk of course they do, just because it was a one off, doesnt mean they were companions, i bet they planned grace to be a full time companion if the movie pulled through, basically a similar story with donna,
I liked this up until the doctor let unit kill the martains. He would've found a way to avoid bloodshed in my opinion
