more» http://www.teapartytweets.org/ (NewsCore) - WHITMORE LAKE, Mich. - Thaddeus McCotter, a five-term congressman with little name recognition but plenty of pizazz, became the latest Republican to enter the GOP presidential sweepstakes when he officially announced his candidacy on Saturday.

McCotter filed the necessary paperwork Friday to make the run, and Saturday -- flanked by wife Rita and two of his three children (the third was at work) -- he formally announced his candidacy at an Independence Day festival at Whitmore Lake, about 30 miles (48km) outside the Motor City, the Detroit Free Press reported.

"What we need in Washington is someone who understands that the wave of the future is not big government, but self-government," McCotter said. "That is why I'm announcing my candidacy today for the Republican nomination to serve as your president of the Unites States."

The 45-year-old attorney joined a crowded early field of GOP candidates, including former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, pizza magnate Herman Cain, and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, FOXNews.com reported.

"There's a lot of people out there that worry the American dream is in danger," McCotter said Friday on WJR-AM in Detroit. "So I was listening to the other candidates. They're fine people. But I don't think I'm hearing anything coming from them that's going to help us seize this opportunity."

McCotter, an attorney and state senator before being elected to Congress in 2002, enters the Republican primary with low-name recognition and negligible support compared with better financed rivals such as Romney and Bachmann, who currently lead the field in the key early-voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

According to his latest campaign filing, the five-term congressman representing Michigan's 11th District including the Detroit suburbs, has $480,000 in his congressional campaign account which he can use on his presidential run, the Free Press reported.

McCotter flirted with the idea, but in May finally rejected the prospect of a 2012 Senate challenge against Michigan's Democratic incumbent Senator Debbie Stabenow, before deciding on a presidential run.

At this stage his long-shot candidacy would appear to mirror similar efforts launched by Congressmen Duncan Hunter (D-Calif.) and Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) during the 2008 cycle. more» http://www.teapartytweets.org/
