Andrew Marriner, clarinet
London Symphony Orchestra (chamber)

Andrew Marriner has recorded the Mozart a number of times, including with his father Sir Neville. Aside from his soloist career, he is also principal clarinetist of the LSO. Here he partners his LSO colleagues in a concert performance of Mozart's ever popular masterpiece.

As everyone knows, Mozart originally wrote it for Anton Stadler and his basset clarinet and this fact was only rediscovered a few decades ago. There has been a trend in recent years, in trying to keep with historical authenticity, to play the restored version for basset clarinet, but here we hear it in the usual adapted version for the standard clarinet.

III. Rondo (allegro)

  • His performance is great...maybe its the video quality but some parts sounded iffy. I prefer Sharon Kam's performance. The Basset sounds so much better with these songs :)

but still amazing! anyone who can play this beautifully has major chops

  • i apologize to everyone for the poor sound quality - it's quite compressed... I didn't imagine my uploads of this performance would be so well received!

  • i've heard alot of versions of this movement and andrew marriner performs the best interpretation by far along with the LSO

  • Well, if you play 6 hours a day talae, those muscles become six-pack cheeks!

No muss or fuss in Mr. Marriner's approach. No affectations, just pure music making in a direct to the heart rendition. He SOUNDS very relaxed both musically and tonally. Bravo!
