Eriskummainen kantele

Ne varsin valehtelevat,
tuiki tyhjeä panevat,
jotka soittoa sanovat,
arvoavat kanteletta

Väinämöisen veistämäksi,
Jumalan kuvoamaksi,
hauin suuren hartioista,
veen koiran koukkuluista.

Soitto on suruista tehty,
murehista muovaeltu:
koppa päivistä kovista,
emäpuu ikipoloista,

kielet kiusoista kerätty,
naulat muista vastuksista.
Sentä ei soita kanteleeni,
ei iloitse ensinkänä,

soitto ei soita suosioksi,
laske ei laatuista iloa,
kun on huolista kuvattu,
murehista muovaeltu.

Truly they lie, they
talk utter nonsense
who say that music*
reckon that the kantele
was carved by Väinämöinen*
fashioned by a god
out of a great pike's shoulders
from a water dog's hooked bones:
no, music was made from grief
moulded from sorrow--
its belly out of hard days
its soundboard from endless woes
its strings gathered from torments
and its pegs from other ills.
So my kantele will not
play, will not rejoice at all
music will not play to please
give off the right sort of joy
for it was fashioned from cares
moulded from sorrow.

  • @kimmotapio83

    It was moulded from sorrow!

  • @oleiros70 Thank you very much for repling from Japan.

  • @halkalon Ah, but Väinämöinen is a god of Finnish mythology: it's just that in the Kalevala, Ilmarinen, Lemminkäinen and Väinämöinen all got a downgrade to "cultural heroes"! :D Lönnrots version of the creation of the world made Ilmatar/Luonnotar more prominent, but in the stuff he actually collected, it was Väinämöinen (after his birth) who "formed the bays and isles with his fingers", and so he was the demiurge rather than Ilmatar.

  • That one dislike is from the poet that got kicked by Väinämöinen on the ocean.. At least if I remember well, it was the ocean. :b

  • @rozniy Väinämöinen is not a god persay, but he was there in the making of the world according to Finnish mythology, as can be seen in runes I and II of The Kalevala. =] He's mostly a very old and wise man who sings the reality, but his singing has nothing to do with him being a music god. He's more like the wisest but he's not really a god.

  • in Kalevala, he was kinda like a great wizard/sorcerer who used kantele as his tool to use spells. kalevalas story tells that väinämöinen was kind-of born from goddes and had lived before other humans... if u need more spesific information, just search from wikipedia "kalevala" ;)

  • Who is "Väinämöinen" in the lyrics? Finnish god of music?
