Poison & Wine written by John Paul White, Joy Williams & Chris Lindsey
You only know what i want I you to I know everything you don't want me to your mouth is poison your mouth is wine you think your dreams are the same as mine
I don't love you but I always will I don't love you but I always will I don't love you but I always will I always will
I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back well the less I give the more I get back your hands can heal, your hands can bruise I don't have a choice, but I'd still choose you
I don't love you but I always will I don't love you but I always will I don't love you but I always will I don't love you but I always will
I don't love you but I always will I don't love you but I always will I don't love you but I always will
I always will I always will I always will I always will
Poison & Wine is a musical snapshot about the dichotomy of love - that while it can be the thing that destroys you, it can also be the very same thing that beckons and builds you. JP and I are both married have been for several years now - and we got to talking one day about what a tug and pull our individual relationships can be. The longer you know someone - and the longer you allow someone to know you - the more the light and shadows inside each person become more vivid. This song was our attempt at being as brutally honest about the dangerous and beautiful process of knowing and being known. (-Joy Williams, The Civil Wars)
The Civil Wars are touring the mid-west with Seabird from Dec. 2-14th! They are also playing 2 FREE shows in NYC, Dec 15th at the Rockwood Music Hall, 6pm and Dec 16th at The Living Room, 7pm. Hope to see you there!

Rachell... I think the song is about how complicated a long-term relationship can get. We get mad at each other and say hurtful things, but we still love each other. Chris Lindsey co-writer of "Poison and Wine"
So, I can't decide. Do you think this is about a couple that's falling apart and knows it's the end? Or a couple that is having hard times, but knows they are going to make themselves go through the pain anyways because they love each other so much they can't go their separate ways? Or something entirely different? Thoughts? I can't seem to get anyone else to talk about this song with me. :)
I like it at 3:09+ with the camera covering their eyes, then bringing their eyes back in view to see their gaze. That is the intimate cherry on the sundae, on top of the harmonic decadence throughout the whole tune. She has a nice clothing designer who flatters her shoulders, too :P
