On February 6th, 2007 the new United States African Command, AFRICOM, was created to address Africas increasing strategic importance and security in the world. However the US Department of Defense has been criticized for overstepping its boundaries by combining its military operation missions with diplomatic elements. With the controversy concerning objectives, area of operations, and communication, the regional security of many African nations may be highly dependent on the success or failure of AFRICOM. Please join the Council and our panel to discuss the future of this command and US relations with the continent. Moderated by Sean McFate: Program Director, BiāPartisan Policy Center. Panelists: Gayle Smith: Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress
Ambassador Mark Bellamy: Senior Fellow, Africa Program and International Security at CSIS
Major General Arnold Fields, USMC (ret): National Defense University
