Barry Dyller, a local civil rights attorney, is standing up for the kids
"I've seen some pretty bad things but I can't say I've ever seen something as bad as this. I can't say I've seen something as bad as kids being incarcerated for no reason at all," Dyller said.
Dyller says thousand of teens were inappropriate sentenced under former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella. Now that his criminal case has come to an end, let the civil battle begin.
"Thousands of kids appeared before Mark Ciavarella between 2003 and 2008. That's the time period we're looking at. So anyone involved there who has not contacted a lawyer really should."
On Friday, Ciavarella was convicted by a federal jury on 12 of the 39 charges brought against him. Dyller would not disclose a number but says he has a substantial amount of clients from this case but believes about 70 percent of the kids jailed under Ciavarella have not come forward.
Dyller tells Eyewitness News, "We want to help victims whose civil rights have been violated."
One woman says what Ciavarella did to her son, ruined her life. Sandy Fonzo says her son committed suicide after being sent away by Ciavarella. Fonzo went face to face with the former judge Friday as he walked out of federal court a free man awaiting sentencing in 60 to 90 days.
