I've been interested in learning how to engrave. Is it an expensive craft to undertake and to get started?
schecteromen666 2 years ago
You can get into engraving for as little as $200 on up to $2000 depending on the equipment that you want to use. I learned with a hammer and chisel which is the cheaper way to get started but many feel that it's also more difficult to learn to do well.

Great work, may I ask what metal your engraving tool is made of please and if gold inlaying, would you blue the piece before or after inlaying?Would be nice to know what metal tools to use on which metals to please.
Thanks

Thank you. The graver is high speed steel, on hard parts I will use carbide. For gold inlay, you want to put the gold in first. Bluing and color case hardening don't affect the gold.

I thought engraving was done with nitric acid. What tool is that your using?

Etching is done with acids. I'm using a small chisel called a "graver" to cut the metal. The graver can be power by hand, hammer or a pneumatic system, which I'm using here. A small air driven piston provides the impact force rather than a hammer.
