Mexico captures 'major cartel boss'

Mexican police have captured the suspected leader of a cult-like drug cartel in the latest blow to a gang that was until recently one of the most notorious in the country.

Federal officers detained alleged La Familia (The Family), boss Jose de Jesus Mendez, known by his nickname "El Chango," or "The Monkey", at a highway checkpoint in central Mexico.

Despite the government's optimism, La Familia hitmen are still at large and have split into factions since Moreno's death.

One new gang, Los Caballeros Templarios (The Knights Templar), is suspected of killing 23 people over the weekend, leaving bodies across Michoacan with threatening notes for rivals.

Violence kills at least 22 in Mexico

At least 22 people have been killed in a string of weekend attacks in Mexico, including a shooting at a bar in Monterrey, the country's third largest city, just hours after the nearby opening of football's Under-17 World Cup.

Another 14 people were killed in the western state of Michoacan, whose bodies were found early on Sunday, authorities said, also blaming drug cartel-related violence there.

Hola, Cactus! Sorprendente lo que sucede en su país. Tengo amigos en México y que siguen las noticias. Es complicado el tema de las drogas, principalmente en la frontera con EE.UU., considerando también que la policía es muy corrupta (más que aquí en Brasil) y no se puede confiar.Ahora incluso con el tema religioso es aún peor. Terrible.
