To commemorate the sixty fifth anniversary of the death of aviator poet John Gillespie Magee Jnr, aviation artist Edward Ash was asked to complete a painting which would celebrate the poem High Flight

The painting was unveiled on Monday 11th December at RAF Digby during a ceremony attended by invited guests including the brother of John Magee, Hugh, together with his wife. John Magee was stationed at Digby when he tragically lost his life during a flying accident.

The Supermarine Spitfire MK11a VZ-E (P7856) depicted, was shared by John Magee and Flt. Sgt. N MacDonnel, and it was during this time on 412 Squadron that Flt. Sgt. MacDonnel had the honour of being the first 412 Squadron pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft, and Me Bf 109, on October 13th 1941.
