The Big Chill

Many years ago, when I was editing a DVD documentary for a local charity group, I realised that I needed footage of snow falling outside a particular chapel. Unfortunately all I had was a still photograph, taken in the height of summer and with scaffolding all around it.

As the final shot was only going to last a second or so, I thought I'd try and fake it. This movie is a quick breakdown of the process I underwent. Although I could do a much better job now, at the time it proved very successful.

The adjustments to the main image were all done in Photoshop, with the snow created in Lightwave and composited in After Effects.

Not intended, but yes, the whole thing looks very jittery here. Might be because it's been compressed too many times.

On the DVD the transitions are a lot more gradual and the snow a lot more fluid - if still a bit fake looking.

It doesn't look well here, but on the DVD I think I got away with it - just.
