Everyone who puts to sea as a lone boat when dinghy fishing should have a source of auxiliary power. The big question is, how big, or more to the point how small an engine should you carry as a viable spare. Here the 4 hp Suzuki DF4 is put through its paces on the back of a Warrior 170.
@bigglyguy Update - have purchased a 15HP Yamaha instead :o) Still a lot to do with the boat before launching but I'm hoping to use the little engine as much as the big thirsty V6...

Pretty much exactly the video I was looking for. I'm moving up from my 19ft deep V boat with a 90 hp engine to a 23 footer 8ft wide boat with 200 hp. I deffo need a backup engine but not sure what size is big enough. I have my eye on a 2nd hand 20hp Johnson. If 4 hp is enough for that 17ft boat then I reckon 20 hp should be OK? I'm also hoping to use the smaller engine for some island hopping when the water is calm. The new boat is pretty darn heavy though..?

@fishaholic2012 its worth the investment, trust me from experience you should always have a small back up outboard

i have a 18 foot cuddy cab and when you breakdown in the rip or in some strong tides a 4 hp wouldn't be enough to bring you back home not even hold you in the same spot thats why i got a 15 hp 4 stroke back up...i also use it for trolling for stripers and blues and it has saved me many times before i got a new main outboard
