Alvin Ailey Documentary - Beyond the Steps

BEYOND THE STEPS is a documentary about the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of America's oldest modern dance companies and most beloved cultural institutions. The film follows the creation of the ballet "Love Stories," a collaborative work by Judith Jamison, Robert Battle and Rennie Harris, and tells the story of what it means to be a dancer in this internationally acclaimed company.

BEYOND THE STEPS aired on the PBS series "Great Performances" in June of 2006.

This is a real juxtaposition to the European or sophisticated dance that we are accustomed to seeing. More of a freestyle,street,urban,funk type of dance. I love the enthusiasm and raw energy.
