  • I think this proves how much of a TOTAL FUCKING BADASS Vinnie is! I feel like I have baby dick every time I listen to this man play. He is the most impressive, thought-provoking, classy, and powerful drummer I think out there. There may be others that surpass him in one of those fields, but he's the total package.

  • @jafrocubic totally agree

  • @lulubelle0bresil Yes -- David Sancious. I agree that his work on the album was fantastic. I love watching this quartet playing live -- they have such a tight sound, and it has a fullness that much larger bands often don't match. I saw Sting in concert on his Back to Bass tour this last year -- still a super sound, but it didn't seem the same without a keyboardist. Of course, trying to find someone to follow Kirkland or Sancious would be hard. But I got to hear Vinnie!

  • @Gretchluver1 I think you are right. thx

  • David Sancious on keyboards, right? What a pity his solo on St Augustine was totally obscured by the guitar : ( (and the video editor!) Wonderful musician! In the album his solo is unbelievable!!!!

  • @dejd Not really. It's hard to describe a feel but the pulse suggests that this song is in 4/4 minus half a beat with a quater note roughly at 90bpm. So 4/4 = 8/8. 8/8 - 1/8 = 7/8.

  • I think David Holsinger and Dave Brubeck would approve of this song and "Straight To My Heart". They're in 7/4 time, and as oldwest517 says, Sting "disguises" this meter. Vinnie does play on every OTHER beat with his cymbal – "1,3,5,7 in one measure, and 2,4,6 in the next one."

  • @CaitlinBrooksMusic It isn't just passages -- both "St. Augustine" and "Straight to my heart" are done 100% in 7 (other than maybe the devil's monologue... which is too slow to really tell.

Sting, like many artists, somewhat "disguises" the 7, making the time signature not immediately apparent. The main way that Vinnie's disguises the 7 is his cymbal, which is every other beat in "St. Augustine" -- 1,3,5,7 in one measure, 2,4,6, in the next. Very cool.

  • Spent years looking for this live performance!!!!! FIIIIINALLYYYYYYYYYYYY ImL

  • @itaiitai21 Why? You can count it in 7/8 or 7/4

  • @CaitlinBrooksMusic you're joking right?
