Famous Kurdish singer, Ciwan Haco, sings a song about Diyarbakir (Kurdish pronunciation, Diyarbekir; or Kurdish name, Amed), a city located in the southeastern Kurdish region of Turkey. Diyarbakir is considered as the historical capital of the Kurds and the larger geographical Kurdistan region that encompasses parts of Turkey, Syria, Iran, and Iraq. Ciwan Haco is originally from the Kurdish city of Qamishli (Kurdish: Qamishlo) in Western Kurdistan in Syria. The concert was performed in the Kurdish city of Batman (Kurdish: Elih) in the Kurdistan region in Turkey and drew a crowd of several hundreds of thousands of people according to estimates by municipality officials. Ciwan Haco is famous for successfully combining traditional Kurdish music with modern jazz, rock, and pop. His earliest work consisted of traditional patriotic Kurdish songs and songs about love and social and political hardships.
