A one and a half pound probe that's four inches long and two and a half inches wide can improve weather forecasts for pilots and everyone else. That's according to a NASA study called the Great Lakes Fleet Experiment.
A team, led by researchers at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., designed and built the Tropospheric Airborne Meteorological Data Report or TAMDAR weather sensor.
The research was part of NASA's Aviation Safety Project, which is working to make the skies safer, especially in bad weather. Weather is a contributing factor in 30 percent of all airplane accidents.
