On March 24th, 1936 the new oceanliner RMS Queen Mary leaves her birthplace, the John Brown Shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland.

This would be her very first voyage of her life and career.

As she headed down the River Clyde, tragedy barely avoided as the great ship runs aground on a sand bar. Luckily, she is freed and continues her way down the river enroute to Gourock, Scotland (NOT SOUTHAMPTON AS THE VIDEO STATES) for further sea trials and tests before her Maiden Voyage on May 27th, 1936.

  • My Dad served his apprenticship on the Queen Mary, he was 16 years old and worked there until1961 and he hated it! the welders had the most injuries of all the trades men, especially eariy on before the safety goggles, my Mum said, it truly was hard times back then, you had to work where you could Thank you for the videos they bring back memories for me.

  • at the end of ww2 my uncle, sgt in the us army, came back aboard this ship :)

later we saw this ship at Long Beach along with the 'spruce goose'

  • Not forgetting their zig-zag crossing.

  • In WW2 both Queens sailed alone across the Atlantic carrying 10 thousand troops each time. They relied on their speed to avoid U Boats. On one crossing the cruiser HMS Curacao sailed acroos the Queen Mary's bow and the Queen Mary cut the cruiser in half..

I can also recall sailing past a huge grey ship in John Browns fitting out basin. It was the Queen Elizabeth. The very next day she left John Browns Clydebank yard and sailed non stop to New York with fitting out workers still on board.

  • I love Scotland :)

    Greenock till I am gone

    xx

  • It wasn't on my personal video list, but I know the video you're talking about. If I recall, the plane you mention met the Mary just out of New York harbor when she was still moving along at around 25 knots. I believe it was the plane that Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker flew to pay tribute to her maiden arrival and showered her decks with beautiful carnations in mark of the celebration. Rickenbacker of course was the US' "Ace of Aces" with 26 kills during WWI.
