Niagara County's Landfill in Wheatfield, NY is located approx. 2 miles from the infamous Love Canal Toxic Dump, along the Niagara River. The site is approx. 1 mile long by 1/3 mile wide, and operated from 1968 to 1976. They accepted Municipal, heavy Industrial, and Chemical wastes on this site. Some of the waste known to be on site are Mercury, phenolic resins, plating tank sludge, and a host of other contaminants. The site is on the EPA National Priorities list for remedial action. The landfill's Proximity to homes on Witmer & River Rd.s poses a continuing threat the communities health.
Also disturbing is a local farmer that has planted crops up to the fence line of the landfill, and surrounding the leachate ponds.
In addition, this area is frequently used by locals for recreational purposes.
