In another EPIC BATTLE of college wrestling titans, here we see the 158 LBS 1977 NCAA Semi- Finals.
The 1977 NCAA Tournament was held in Norman, OK - March 17 - 19 at 'brand new state of the art at the time' Lloyd Noble Arena which had recently opened 14 months earlier.
On the far mat, we see Iowa State Cyclone Legend Kelly Ward battle with University of Tennessee gladiator Ethan Reeve. The match went down to the final ticks where Ward came out on top of an intense scramble to win 5-3 advancing to the NCAA Championship Match to face familiar nemesis Lee Kemp.
Also in this rare 8mm film clip, you see Wisconsin's Lee Kemp scrap stubborn Iowa Hawk Mike McGivern on the nearest to camera mat. Kemp wins 3-1.
This clip shows the top four seeds go at it at the same time (pre-ESPN!)!
1 - Kemp, 2 - Ward, 3 - Reeve, 4 - McGivern.
Iowa State Cyclones win the Team Title for Head Coach Harold Nichols. This was Nichols' (6th) SIXTH National Championship Team while at the helm for the Cyclones.
