Death of Eddie Thompson, Chairman and Owner of Dundee United

Eddie Thompson died today - 15th October 2008.


The main photo in this video - the floodlight towards the end - was published in The Scottish Sun under the title 'United's Shining Light' on the back page of the paper (on 16/10/08).

The headline story began -

"THE sun sets on a day of mourning at Tannadice."

- then followed with,

"A ray hits a lone floodlight and it glints like a beacon signalling the end of Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompsons courageous fight against cancer."

Eddie was a fan as well as knowing how to run a business. In death - as well as in victory and defeat we should be proud of his work. I am proud as a fellow fan that he would have been able to watch my film "Little Giants" - and its part in the DVD Flair Play. Eddie ran a business through the eyes of a true fan. I now dedicate the following adaptation of "Little Giants" to Eddie Thompson OBE - Chairman, Owner and Fan. Football is about connection between people and Eddie knew that.

I think he would have been proud that - I have connected again with United though my first ever published photograph - 'United's Shining Light' in a national newspaper. Football is indeed like that: it brings us together.

When I saw the glint in the floodlight on the day of his death, I knew that it was the image that said everything.

Eddie had the heart and joy of a fan and the the mind and instinct for business.

Today at the St Mirren game the sounds of The Beatles "Let it be" just had so much impact on me - like listening to your Ipod without realising you have your are earphones in. It said everything. Eddie seems to have had the same Beatles taste as me!

When I heard that I thought of that single glint in the floodlight that got my photo published in The Sun - "United's Shining Light" - was shining through the clouds today.

It is times like this when Aberdeen and Dundee United should put thier rivarly aside.

I was at Tannadice when Derek McInnes was playing for your team and it so happened i am mates with derek's sister and i got tickets to go down with his sisters husband and i did and met eddie thompson and i swear i couldn't have met a nicer guy.
