Originally there were women in Kabuki... in fact, the very first Kabuki performance was led by a Shinto priestess. But over time, prostitutes became associated with the art, and it fell into disrepute. Finally legal action was taken via an edict issued by the Shogunate. Women were banned from Kabuki, and the art itself was reorganized into serious drama, with men taking all the roles.
Perhaps the best, most respected and most widely-known Kabuki actor who takes the roles of women is Bando.

totally kabuki.
You can tell that's a man playing a woman role by the way he folds his thumbs under his palms to make his hands look longer and more delicate.
